Holtz, legendary coach and sports icon. played 2 years as a lineman for Kent State In the 50's before an injury took him off of the field.

Coach Reggie Barlow now coaches his alma mater, Alabama State after a professional career that took him to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa.
He was a wide receiver.

Alabama A&M's Anthony Jones played for the Redskins and Chargers after his days at the University of Maryland and WItichita State.

Auburn Coach Gene Chizik alma mater was Florida, where he was a linebacker and played in the Peach Bowl.

Alabama Coach Nick Saban was born in West VIrginia and played at Kent State, just like another native of West Virginia, Lou Holtz.
Saban's middle name is Lou.
Was he named after Holtz?

Eddie Garfinkle of Birmingham Southern was starting linebacker for Jacksonville State University.
He was a defensive coach of 20 years at several locations including JSU and Spain Park high.

Jacksonville State's head coach, Jack Crowe, did not play college football, but opted for baseball at Jeff State.
He had played football at West End High School in Brmingham.
He is in his tenth year at Jacksonville.

William "Billy' Joe, of Miles College, was AFL "Rookie of the Year" in 1963 and has been coaching almost 40 years.

Pat Sullivan was Heisman Trophy winner as Auburn quarterback and went on to play for Atlanta., Washington and San Francisco, before returning to coach at UAB and now head coach at Samford.

His college playing days were under Tom Osborne and the Nebraska Huskies.
His coaching experience includes Alabama State and Sidney Lanier in Montgomery.

Troy State's Larry Blakeney enjoys the 4th longest uninterrupted coaching career in the nation behind Paterno and Bowden. He was the first sophomore to play starting quarterback fro "Shug" Jordan at Auburn.

Willie Slater of Tuskegee, was a four year starting quarterback with West Alabama before starting his 29+ years of coaching.

Bryant in the late 70's and now coaches UAB.

Terry Bowden, of U of North Alabama is the only coach in Alabama that seems to have his own website.
He probably learned to play football in his back yard from his daddy, but he did his time on the collegiate field as a running back for West Virginia in 77&78 before becoming a graduate assistant in 78.

Three of Alabama's four year colleges have sports programs that do not include football.

They are UAH, University of West Alabama and Talladega.
