Speed Learning and memory courses that were part of the culture of the 60's seem to have disappeared and replaced with
the pocket computers.
No longer does a business person need to remember names, appoiintments or phone numbers but there are still people
who need to remember where thdy put their glasses and students still strugle to recall the enzymes secreted by the
pancreas.
Over 30 years ago, while I was working at a local university, I developed and taught a course that was designed to help
students learn information more quidkly and remember it longer.
The course was expanded and taught as a personal development course for local business and industries and as a creative
educaton course for teachers seeking continuing education credit.
I have divided them into 5 steps.
Of the 5 steps in the quick learnig process the one that is most entertaining and best known is the third step, association.
Click at the end of this sentence for an example of using association to speed learn the first 10 presidents in order, then

If you hae gone to the picture of the presidents, you have covered the first ten in the order of their appearence in just a few
seconds or minutes.
You can probably recall some of the names or symbols after just a short exposure but of the effective techniques we all
accept the fact that repetition is one of the corner stones of memory.
Therefore students are encouraged to print off the scene and put it in a priminant place for constant exposure.
We can remember scenes much longer than we can remember list .
Pupils are encouraged to notice the symbols in the order they are presented.
One would study the scene just as one would study a list.
In recalling the presidents scene, try to recall the objects and sound them out in order to remember the name.
When a student learns effective association techniques they can create their own scene.
About 30 % of all students say they use some form of association techniques occasionally to help with material.
There have been several "speed learning" courses costing hundreds of dollars, that teach some of these techniques
There are some steps that make the association process more effective than others and we sill discuss them later.
But an important aspect of the learnig process is not coming up with the final symbol ...but actually using the learning
material to attempt to find a symbol.
But creating the final product, a good memory symbol, will stay with you forever. Click here for directory of subjects.
Besides pictures and symbols, there are dozens of other methods of making material easier to remember.
One effective teaching technique is to make a unique point about something.
For example we have a section called the "worst gramatical mistakes" people make.
It the West and North people , even on television, misuse the words "take" and "bring"
In the South people misuse "good" and "well".
A teacher can make a point of the proper use of good and well by posting a sign on the board saying:
" Our team is not playing good this year"
Regardless of the team's record, the students will be shocked that the teacher was so brazen as to make the statement.
Leaving the sign posted in the classroom will remind the students of the proper grammer.
Other examples of bad grammer can be added to the class' list and it becomes a point of focus.
It is one of the techniques used in effective advertising when an agency creates a name for or about a poduct .
